Meet Eric
Eric Pryzant graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a dual undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and Plan II. After college, he went to work as a mechanical engineer in the oil and gas field where he found himself less enthused about the profession and often used coding to solve problems.
The mechanical engineer realized that his work was not engineering as much as it was computer coding. “So, I decided to get my education and formalize it,” Pryzant said.
“It’s such a great fit, and I’m fortunate I was able to pivot into this new career.”

Engineering a New Career Path
Since he was already coding in his role in the oil and gas industry, he decided to pivot and make computer science his career. He chose to enroll in the Master of Computer Science Online (MCSO) degree program at The University of Texas at Austin.
Earning the Degree
The degree, which consisted of ten courses, cost him $1,000 per course. Not only did he find the program gave him access to professors who are experts in their field, but his cohort provided him with invaluable connections, including a friend who worked at Microsoft.
Eric earned his degree in just two years.
Finding Footing in a New Field
Upon graduation, Eric landed a job at tech giant Microsoft and doubled the salary he had previously earned as a mechanical engineer. He works almost exclusively from his new home which he bought with his new salary.
“With extra financial freedom there comes greater opportunity. That salary, the job and this house came at the right time for us to start a family."
